Transformative Learning Theory

The Transformative Learning theory best explains how adults learn because this theory as explained by Mezirow(1978) helps educators develop critical thinkers in the classroom. His findings emphasized the importance of engaging learners in classroom with practices that assist in the development of critical reflection through use of reflective journaling, classroom dialogue, and critical questioning (Taylor, 2006).
Most instructors experience this transformative learning in a classroom. The instructor can visually observe this transformation occurring as the semester progresses. The student becomes more knowledgeable in the subject matter based upon the guidance of the instructor (Daloz, 1999). The instructor act as a guide throughout this transformation of learning by engaging the students in the classroom.
